The whole point of justice is to punish those who are responsible for certain crimes. The purpose of punishing individuals is to stop offenders from repeating the same crime. However most offenders will not change. Many will continue committing crimes and will ignore the consequence of their actions. What justice fails to accomplish is to fix the situation. By punishing the offender, the offender would develop a greater hatred for the victim and would grow more violent, The victim would still be hurt by the offender and if the offender is released, he would continue to do more crimes. In result, nothing will change. However instead of punishing the offender, a better solution would be to "heal" the offender. Circle Justice focuses on healing the offender and the victim. By healing both the offender and the victim, they would form relationships, not separations. In the book "Touching Spirit Bear", Peter Driscal may have sustained permanent injures and other damage from the beating he took from Cole Mathews. By punishing Cole Mathews, you would not fix the damage that has been done to Peter. And Cole would continue his anger issues. However by healing Cole, we may not be able to restore the permanent damage done he has done, however you would stop a criminal committing further crimes and the victim would not develop a hatred for the offender. |
